| Résumé: | Immunology is a fundamental branch of biological sciences that studies the structure, functions,
and mechanisms of the immune system. Throughout evolution, the immune system has
developed highly specialized defense strategies that enable the organism to distinguish self-
components from foreign elements and to maintain physiological homeostasis. Its study
encompasses the body's responses to infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and
protozoa, as well as immune-related disorders including autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivity
reactions, and transplant rejection. Immunology also investigates the cellular and molecular
mechanisms underlying immune responses, including antibody production, complement
activation, and the coordination of immune cells.
This course is designed for second-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Common Core
Program of Biological Sciences. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental
principles of immunology and presents the major cellular and molecular events involved in
innate and adaptive immune responses. Particular emphasis is placed on the components of the
immune system, their interactions, and the mechanisms that ensure effective protection against
pathogens while preserving self-tolerance.
By the end of this course, students will have acquired the essential knowledge required to
understand the organization and functioning of the immune system, the mechanisms involved
in host defense against infectious agents, and the immunological basis of autoimmune diseases,
hypersensitivity reactions, and other immune-mediated disorders. |
