Résumé: | The indications for fitting scleral lenses have evolved over the last few years, from lenses intended only for particularly irregular corneas, to a much broader spectrum of indications. Correcting irregular corneas to restore vision is the main indication for fitting scleral lenses.
Corneal topography is an examination indicated to assess keratoconus, a disease characterized by corneal deformation. Corneal topography is a computer-assisted topographic analysis that maps the curvature of the anterior surface of the cornea.
Corneal topography is used to guide the adapter through all the parameters of the first scleral trial lens, including corneal profile (oblate or prolate geometry), sagittal, radius of curvature and even peripheral clearances. This saves the practitioner an enormous amount of time and the patient a quicker fitting experience, so topography is an essential tool for optimizing lens choice. |
