Caractérisation d'un verre érodé par sablage à chaud

Abstract

Because of its fragility, glass is very sensitive to the presence of pre-existing superficial micro cracks or induced by an external process such as severe environmental conditions. In the Saharan regions of southern Algeria where temperatures can exceed 50°C during the day with freezing nights depending on the season, sandstorms are considered a destructive and dangerous phenomenon. The impacts of sand cause the degradation of glass in residential windows, windshields, etc. This damage generates defects which become unstable under mechanical and/or thermal stresses and lead to the catastrophic breakage of the glass, limiting its use in many fields. Its mechanical properties as well as its optical quality are catastrophically weakened. The objective of this work is to characterize a degraded glass by hot sandblasting. The effect of sand impacts when the latter is brought to different temperatures on the one hand and when the glass is heated on the other hand, on the optical and mechanical properties of a glass subjected to sandblasting will be studied. The fixed parameters are the projected mass of sand (50g), the angle of impact 90° and the speed of the sandblast equal to 30m/s. We varied the size of the sand particles ([90-150], [150-250] and [250-500] µm), as well as the heating temperature ([20, 30, 40, 50, 60] °C ) for glass (Tv), sand (Ts) and for both at the same time (Tv= Ts). The results obtained show that damage by hot sandblasting depends closely on the heating temperatures, either the glass temperature Tv or the sand temperature Ts or when Tv= Ts
