Abstract

In this study we analyze the impact of environmental requirements for packaging on the export performance of food exports in Algeria.We use ten year panel data from 22 firms and apply fixed effects and general method of moments (GMM) models. We find that certification to environmental standards in general and to specific individual environmental standards, has an effect on firms’ export performance, at the extensive margin and at the intensive margin, and on export values. Our case-study results imply that environmental requirement for packaging act as a catalyst to trade, for certified firms and vice versa.
