Résumé: In this work, a method based on the mechanical strength for detection and measurement of the crack layer 'SSD sub surface damage' of glass ground by alumina abrasives was used. The relationship between the break strength and the depth of median cracks generated by indentation tests has been established. The effect of surface roughness SR on depth of subsurface damage was established by varying size of grains and time of grinding and we could establish the constant of proportionality between SR and SSD. Moreover we determined a correlation between subsurface damage and the size of abrasive grains. Through the results, this method allows to evaluate in a simple way the depth of subsurface damage during the process of grinding or other technical damage.
