Résumé: Immunity encompasses the biological mechanisms that enable living organisms to recognize,
resist, and eliminate foreign substances, particularly infectious agents, while maintaining tissue
integrity and physiological homeostasis. The coordinated network of organs, tissues, cells, and
soluble mediators involved in these protective processes constitutes the immune system.
Together, these components generate highly regulated responses that protect the host against
pathogens and other potentially harmful challenges.
Immunology is the branch of biomedical science devoted to the study of the immune system,
its components, and its functions. The origins of modern immunology are commonly traced to
Edward Jenner, whose pioneering work on vaccination against smallpox in 1796 laid the
foundation for one of the most significant advances in medical history. Since then, immunology
has evolved into a multidisciplinary field that integrates molecular biology, genetics,
microbiology, biotechnology, and clinical medicine.
Although initially focused on host defense against infectious diseases, immunology now plays
a central role in understanding a wide range of physiological and pathological processes.
Advances in immunological research have revealed the involvement of the immune system in
allergy, autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, transplantation, cancer, metabolic disorders, and
tissue repair. Consequently, immunology has become an essential discipline for both
fundamental biological research and modern healthcare.
The immune system represents a remarkably sophisticated and dynamic network that has
evolved to provide efficient protection while maintaining self-tolerance. Understanding its
cellular and molecular mechanisms is essential for deciphering the pathogenesis of numerous
human diseases and for developing innovative diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic
strategies. This course provides an in-depth study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms
governing immune responses. Particular emphasis is placed on the development, activation,
regulation, and functional specialization of immune cells, as well as on their applications in
biotechnology and health sciences.
By the end of this course, students will possess a comprehensive understanding of immune
system organization and function, enabling them to apply immunological concepts to research,
biotechnology, and biomedical innovation.

Résumé: The course "Drug Design and Development" is designed for first-year Master’s students in
pharmaco-toxicology option. It offers a comprehensive overview of the modern drug development
process, from target identification to clinical trials and regulatory approval. The main objective of
the course is to provide students with a clear understanding of how new drugs are discovered,
designed, optimized, and brought to market. Emphasis is placed on both theoretical principles and
practical applications, preparing students for future research or industry roles.
The course begins with an introduction to drug discovery, including a historical overview and the
classification of drug types and molecular targets such as enzymes, receptors, and nucleic acids. It
then explores methods for target identification and validation using in silico, in vitro, and in vivo
approaches. Students will learn about various strategies for identifying lead compounds , including
high-throughput screening, rational drug design, and the use of natural products. The process of
lead optimization is covered in detail, focusing on structure-activity relationships (SAR) and
ADMET properties, which are crucial for ensuring efficacy and safety.
The course also covers preclinical development, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics,
and toxicological testing in animal models. This is followed by an in-depth look at clinical
development, outlining the four phases of clinical trials, study design, ethical considerations, and
data analysis. Regulatory frameworks are discussed, with attention given to agencies like the FDA
(Food and Drug Administration) and EMA (European Medicines Agency), and the requirements
for submitting investigational new drug (IND) and new drug application (NDA) dossiers. Finally,
the course highlights emerging trends and challenges in the field, such as the integration of
artificial intelligence in drug discovery, personalized medicine, and the development of treatments
for rare diseases.
